On this week’s podcast, I hand over the reins of the question master to Curtain Call’s Sophie Soanes. You may recall hearing Sophie when we did our Brit School Episode…that would be epsode 34 if you want to go back and have a listen. On that episode, you would have heard Archie Madekwe talk about his experiences at the Brit School. At the time, he was studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, but he was just about to go into rehearsals for his professional debut. And what a debut it is. Archie was cast as Billy in Edward Albee’s “The Goat – or Who is Sylvia?” in London’s West End alongside Damian Lewis, Sophie Okonedo and Jason Hughes
On this week’s podcast cast, to celebrate Sir Laurence Olivier’s birth date on May 22 1907, I would like to bring you selection of performers who have appeared on the stage named after him at The National Theatre on London’s South Bank. Making it to The Olivier Stage is seen as the pinnacle of a theatre professional’s career.
On this week’s podcast cast, it’s another understudy special! No Man’s Land understudies Andrew Jarvis and Simon Rhodes sat down with me in their dressing rooms to let me in on what it was like understudying two knights of the realm (Sirs Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) as well as two well-known actors of both stage and screen in Owen Teale and Damien Molony. They both gave a great insight into their process, the experience of playing on tour in different theatres and in once case, actually having a little mini run when one “Sir” had to go off for a weekend.
On this week’s podcast cast, I’m taking you across the pond to West Virginia. What some people have called the northern most southern state, and the southern most northern state in the USA. “Out There on Fried Meat Ridge Road” is a new play by American Playwright Keith Stevenson, which recently transferred to the West End after a critically acclaimed run at the White Bear in Kennington. It’s bonkers. It’s wacky. It’s horrifically relevant for today’s times. And like it says in the title it is “Out There.” But it's a whole lot of fun!
Normally, I go backstage and have a chat with the cast, but was unable to for this production. So, Olivier Award winner Denise Gough, currently in “Angels in America”, stepped into my shoes (Thank you, Denise) and chatted with cast and productions crew. We’re bringing you her banter with Curtain Call friend Imogen Doel, who you last heard in The Importance of Being Earnest podcast, and Aiofe Duffin who stepped in for Kathy Rose O’Brien to play Kate at the very last minute after O’Brien injured herself on stage during previews.
